Synopsis
Rebeca Perez, a 30 year old high school teacher, spends her summer as a fire lookout on a remote mountaintop in the wilderness. She’s told that there is a great deal of criminal activity in these mountains, including marijuana production by Mexican crime families, who maintain armed guards to protect their crops and booby trap access trails. When a fire breaks out and spreads over several thousand acres, crews are summoned from several states, including Utah, where an elite fire crew is maintained at the state prison. Nathan Corday, a member of this crew, is serving a five to fifteen year sentence for armed burglary. While working on the fire line, Corday is assaulted by another inmate—kills him in self-defense, then flees across country. By chance he finds the lookout and abducts Rebeca, compelling her to lead him across the wilderness. Rebeca loathes her captor and wants only to escape from him, never imagining that she will owe her life to him and that he will enable her to recover from a tragedy that had made her suicidal. He, in turn, will owe her much. Without her he would perish in the wilderness full of danger and a stalking mountain lion. As they emerge from the wilderness, even more threatening human elements await them. Will they survive?

The FirewatcherA stunning new novel, The Firewatcher by Geoff Aggeler, the author of Johnny Ringo, has all the spellbinding elements that spur the reader on to finish the novel from cover to cover in one sitting. It is fast-paced, exciting, dramatic, blood curdling and shocking at times and sometimes heartwarmingly moving. Its main setting is the mountain wilderness that serves Los Angeles as its spectacular back drop. These mountains are prone to raging forest fires, are harboring hidden dope gardens, are the sanctuary of roaming mountain lions, and have hidden areas so untouched and wild that humans hardly ever penetrate them. Rebecca, the novel's heroine, exudes a kind of magnetism and an almost mysterious power that not only holds sway over the males who cross her path but even a ferocious predator in the wild. It feels as if she had been lifted out of the ancient myths--part Diana, Artemis, Athena and Minerva. She has that sort of quality at times even though she is also very human and not perfect in the choices she makes and the relationships she enters into that cause her to suffer. Corday, the central male protagonist is a complex character--a brilliant mind, an abused child, a notable academic and a sometime criminal. The whole novel is a fantastically thrilling ride through darkness and violence, esoteric knowledge, tenderness, love and empathy, the natural world and a slice of true wilderness. Superficially read, The Firewatcher appears to be a thriller with its rogue male characters and criminal elements. But it has much more depth than a thriller because of its underlying literary qualities. It has the potential of drawing into its sphere readers with substantially different preferences as far as their reading materials are concerned.

The Firewatcher edition by Geoff Aggeler Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a fast-paced good story I just stumbled across, kind of by mistake. Good writing style and moments of suspense. I hope it gets discovered by others!
Congratulations to Geoff Aggeler on writing a superbly crafted captivating story. With an ear for language and an artist's eye for detail, he has produced a masterful novel that is hard to put down. From Greek mythology to Baudelaire, to Neruda, from Vietnam to western US, from barrios to pueblos, from prisons to universities, to a magestic wilderness, Aggeler offers the reader an intellectual, sensual and spiritual feast "leaving him hungry where he most satisfies." He left me wanting more pages to turn.
This is a fun book to read. Anyone living in Southern California will find it compelling not only with the descriptions of the terrain, but also the behavior of the fire. Both are depicted accurately so I am assuming the passages regarding Native American nuances are accurate also.
Good reading.
